It’s April and here’s some jobs you can be doing with the kids in the garden over the Easter holidays:-
– Prepare the ground for pumpkins by adding lots of organic matter to the soil;
– Sow early carrots, radish and chard outdoors;
– Sow leeks, lettuce and peas indoors or outdoors;
– Sow French beans and pumpkins in pots and keep them in a warm place;
– Plant onion and shallot sets into pots to get established before planting out in 6 weeks time. This stops birds from taking them out of the soil;
– Early potatoes can be planted out in open ground if the soil is warm enough – ideally 5 degrees C;
– Protect outdoor crops with fleece or cloches as long as frost is likely;
– Earth up early potatoes to protect the shoots from frost.
